If you’ve been online long enough you probably have heard of the “World of” series games. World of Planes, World of Tanks, and World of Warships… or Battleships, if it wasn’t confusing enough. Each offers a specific type of vehicular combat, ranging from the skies to the land to the ocean.
But what if you want it all in one game? Well in 2017 (when their small/light ship combat is slated to be released for open testing) War Thunder will be the answer (http://warthunder.com/en/). War Thunder currently features plane and tank combat, with bleed over combat in various modes. What do I mean by that? I mean that while in tank combat aircraft can be summoned for you and your squad mates to use to try and gain air superiority over your opponent. In another newer game mode, players battle each other using bomber aircraft versus anti-aircraft vehicles.
What’s the best thing about this? It’s free. Yeah, you can buy premium currency and use money to rank up in the game. But if you want the satisfaction of climbing the ranks you won’t spend a lot of money on the game, but it is an option.
Now, what are you going to find once you download the game? You going to be tossed into a rather scientific arena based out of various locations on the ground and in the air. While they have a tutorial dealing with planes (the first vehicles they give you) and tanks, most people are probably just going to jump right into the multi-player like I did. And if you’re one of those people some of my future posts are going to be aimed at the “how” of using the vehicles.
You will start off with a series of reservist units from five different factions: Americans, Germans/Italians, Russians, British, and Japanese. Each one has both tanks and planes, except for Japan, which has several tanks that are supposedly going to be added in the future.
Almost all the factions begin with bi-planes, except for the Americans, which only recently added a bi-plane, previously having only mono-planes. I find bi-planes to be some of the hardest planes to fight because they turn on a dime and have very little to break on them.
Tanks begin with the very first examples of WWII tanks or post WWI designs. Of these the most fragile are definitely the lightly armored British tanks. They move very quickly (especially in Arcade mode, the easiest mode to play) and can actually flip themselves. The fact that they can be completely shredded by small caliber machine guns does not help either. In these early games you will come across examples of “The Russian Bias” a theory that the Gaijin, the makers of War Thunder, have purposefully made the Russian faction’s vehicles to be over powered. The Russian vehicles are probably some of the easiest to play, and are definitely fun to play tearing through opponents with what seems to be ease, they are not invincible. All it comes down to is skill.
